Helen Scarborough
Independent Ecologist & Protected Species Consultant
Helen Scarborough Bsc (Hons) Msc has worked in ecological consultancy since graduating from Sheffield University in 1996.
During her career she has undertaken many different projects all over the country including botanical surveys, protected species surveys (particularly great crested newts and bats), aquatic macrophyte surveys in connection with Urban Waste Water Directive, river corridor surveys, preparation of management plans, bat surveys and preparation of mitigation strategies on proposed wind turbine sites, ecological surveys and input into EIAs, securing of Natural England licences in respect of work affecting protected species and small research projects. She has project managed large projects including great crested newt translocation projects in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Lincolnshire, Suffolk and greater London, road enhancement schemes in Lincolnshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire and botanical surveys in connection with proposed developments in Bedfordshire and Lincolnshire. Other projects have included Environmental Site Supervision for large coastal flood defence schemes and road building schemes.
Research projects have included advising the Environment Agency on aquatic macrophyte management on watercourses in Norfolk and advising on the management and monitoring of freshwater ecosystems in London . Desk studies have included research into the ecology and growth of aquatic macrophytes.
Helen holds a Natural England great crested newt survey licence and has experience of surveys throughout England and Wales . A licensed bat worker, Helen is also a Natural England volunteer warden and has led bat walks for the general public and works with local schools and youth clubs.
In 2005 she left a Senior Ecologist position at a large consultancy to work as a freelance ecologist under the name Helen Scarborough Ecology. This has led to working with clients such as The Wildlife Trust, Environment Agency, Hyder Consulting, The Church Conservation Trust and The Kier Group.
